Reduced VAT Rate of 6% in Belgium: A Long-Awaited and Welcome Decision for the Art Market

Belgium has just announced a long-awaited measure: the VAT rate applicable to the sale of works of art, antiques and collectors' items will be set at 6%.

This decision, taken by the new Minister of Finance, Mr Jan Jambon, follows lengthy discussions at European level and strong mobilisation by stakeholders in the Belgian art market. It places Belgium back on a favourable path for the circulation of works of art, in line with the practices of its European neighbours: 5.5% in France, 7% in Germany and 8% in Luxembourg.

The SNA welcomes this development, which represents recognition of the economic, cultural and heritage role of the art market. It will help preserve the competitiveness of Belgian galleries, artists, auction houses and fairs such as BRAFA and Art Brussels, which were threatened by the proposed increase to 21%.
