Each week, the Executive Committee of the Syndicat National des Antiquaires (SNA) meets to actively promote and defend the interests of the profession.

Its agenda is filled with meetings involving French public institutions and key stakeholders across the art market.

Representing the SNA, Mathias Ary Jan (President) and Christophe Hioco (Treasurer), both permanent representatives of the Association, were joined on this occasion by Antonia Eberwein (Vice-President) at a meeting convened by the Art Market Observatory, alongside representatives of France's leading art market organizations and public institutions.

It was essential for the SNA to ensure that the issue of the new EU regulation governing the import of cultural goods, due to come into force on 28 June 2025, was included on the agenda, as it remains one of the profession's most pressing concerns.

The SNA representatives outlined the Association's major concerns regarding the implementation of the regulation and its potential consequences for the French art market, including the risk of businesses relocating their activities to London.

Unsurprisingly, several other art market organizations attending the meeting echoed the concerns expressed by the Syndicat National des Antiquaires.

The SNA's next step will be to work closely with the French Ministry of Culture so that the Ministry can relay the Association's proposals and concerns at the European level.

About the Art Market Observatory

Chaired by Arnaud Oseredczuk, the Art Market Observatory was established in December at the initiative of the French Minister of Culture. It has since become an essential forum for dialogue between the French government and art market professionals.

The Observatory brings together representatives of the principal French art market organizations—including auction houses, judicial auctioneers, experts, gallery owners, antique dealers, booksellers and numismatists—as well as representatives of the relevant government departments responsible for cultural property, including the Ministry of Culture, the police and gendarmerie, customs authorities and the Ministry of Justice.
