Ruten - A tribute to the painter Takehiko Sugawara at the Taménaga Gallery
While Takehiko Sugawara had been eagerly anticipating this Paris exhibition—one he regarded as among the most inspiring, as well as an opportunity to reunite with his audience—it has now become a tribute to his life and work following his accidental passing last July. His wife and children, in collaboration with Galerie Taménaga, wished to bring this project to fruition, remaining faithful to the unwavering commitment the artist devoted to his painting until his very last moment.
Entitled Ruten, the exhibition takes its name from a term that held special significance for the artist and that he frequently used as the title of his works. In Japanese, the word refers to the ceaseless flow and continuous transformation of all things. It also evokes the passage from life to death, the subtle continuity between disappearance and rebirth, suggesting the immutable essence that endures beyond ever-changing forms.
In this context, Ruten becomes both a tribute and an act of remembrance, revealing the flow that permeates Sugawara's painting. The exhibition celebrates a lifetime of unwavering dedication to art and the enduring resonance of his work, which remains vibrantly alive despite his absence.
Nearly forty paintings and drawings will be presented, tracing the artist's journey from his first collaboration with the gallery in 2012 to his final works. This selection offers a compelling journey through the diverse forms, themes, and techniques that shaped Sugawara's singular artistic language and secured his distinctive place in the history of contemporary Japanese art.
